Author Profile

Dr K. A. Gopinath holds a PhD in Agronomy from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India. He joined Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in 2003 and worked for 5 years at ICAR-Vivekananda Institute of Hill Agriculture, Almora. In 2008, he joined ICAR-Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad as Senior Scientist and is presently working as Principal Scientist (Agronomy). He is working on organic farming since 15 years. His other research interests include integrated farming systems and weed management particularly in rainfed production systems. His research contributions have been recognized at the national level and he is the recipient of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Team Award for Outstanding Multidisciplinary Research (2005-06), Lal Bahadur Shastri Young Scientist Award (2007-08) of ICAR and Young Agronomist Award (2007) of Indian Society of Agronomy. He has published 70 papers in reputed journals and is serving as an editorial board member of ‘International Journal of Bio-resource and Stress Management’ and was awarded ‘The Best Editor Award’ for outstanding contribution in the year 2013. Dr A. V. Ramanjaneyulu has completed his B.Sc. (Ag.) and M.Sc. (Ag.) Agronomy from ANGRAU in 1998 and 2000, respectively and PhD in Agronomy from Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, India in 2006. Presently, he is working as Senior Scientist (Agronomy) at RARS, Palem, Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, Telangana. He is a recipient of Young Agronomist Award of Indian Society of Agronomy. His specialization includes castor agronomy, dryland agriculture with main emphasis on farm pond technology, micro irrigation, and organic farming. He has reviewed several articles for many national and international journals. He has 40 research papers, two edited textbooks, 13 book chapters, seven technical bulletins and one practical manual to his credit.

About The Book

The practice of farming described as ‘organic’ is being promoted under many names including natural farming, biological farming, Agnihotra farming, ecological farming, homa farming etc. Organic farming offers an opportunity for smallholders to improve their production without relying on external capital and inputs and to gain premium prices using organic production methods. In India, there has been significant increase in the area under certified organic farming during the last 13 years. Presently, about 1.44 million ha area is under certified organic cultivation and India ranks 9th in terms of total land under organic cultivation. Further, India has the largest number of certified organic producers (about 0.84 million) and accounted for 1.18 million tons of certified organic produce.
