About The Book

Meghalaya is one of the seven sister states of the North eastern Hill region of India. It is popularly known as “Abode of clouds”. Khasi, Jaintia and Garo are the major tribal groups of the state. Meghalaya generally has very humid climate. The state enjoys typical South-West monsoon climate and North East winter winds. The soils are very strong to strong acidic in nature with medium organic matter content and low availability of phosphorus and potash contents. The state is basically an agrarian state with a significant commercial forestry industry. Rice is the staple food in the state and mainly local verities are grown in the state. Agriculture and allied sector is the main backbone for generation of income and employment opportunities. The climate condition is suitable for all types of crops but production and productivity level of these crops are very less compare to national levels so to enhance the level of production and productivity of various crops in the Meghalaya state certain research and development initiatives are needed. In Meghalaya the data on area, production and yield of a particular crop is very difficult to access and it is becoming more difficult to access secondary information at micro level i.e. at district and block level to initiate the research and development programme in the field of agriculture. For such type of development programmes researcher, policy maker and research scholar needs the historical data on area production and yield for a particular crop in the Meghalaya state. Therefore the present book entitled “Performance of Agricultural Crops in Meghalaya” is an effort to make available required data of various crops like food grains, pulses, fibre, oilseeds and horticulture are being grown in the Meghalaya state. Hence, this book will be helpful to the researchers, policy makers, teachers and students who are involved in the field of agriculture specially in the Meghalaya state and country as a whole.
