Author Profile
Dr. A. K. Vashisht is presently working as Associate Professor in the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, College of Agricultural Engineering and Post-Harvest Technology, Central Agricultural University (Imphal), Ranipool, Gangtok, Sikkim. Before joining to the present position, he served as Junior Research Officer/Assistant Engineer (Design) in the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand for four years from February 2006 to January 2010. He was co-PI of All India Coordinated Research Project on ÒGroundwater UtilizationÓ (now named as ÒIrrigation Water ManagementÓ). During his service in three premier institutions of India (i.e. PAU, Ludhiana; GBPUAT, Pantnagar; CAU, Imphal), he got exposure to the problems like declining water-table and brackish groundwater of Punjab, scarcity of water in Shiwalik foothills, drying-up of artesian wells in Tarai region and springs in lower and mid-Himalayan regions of Uttarakhand and Sikkim. For tackling with the mentioned issues, he proposed various management/adaptive strategies through research projects and publications. In his regular service experience of more than ten years, he has authored 51 research publications which include international/national research papers, papers in conference proceedings, book chapters, popular articles, and laboratory manuals. At present, he is PI of one externally funded (DST, Govt. of India) and one intramural research project (CAU, Imphal). Before joining the GBPUAT, Pantnagar, he worked as Post-doctorate research fellow for about two years in the Department of Soil and Water Engineering, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Earlier, he obtained his M. Tech. and Ph. D. degrees from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana with specializations in well hydraulics and brackish groundwater management, respectively.
Dr. Rajan Aggarwal is presently working as Senior Research Engineer and Head of Department of Soil and Water Engineering, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab. He is also PI of All India Coordinated Research Project on ÒIrrigation Water ManagementÓ and Project on ÒGroundwater Resource Management to Mitigate the Impact of Climate Change in Punjab and Haryana (NICRA)Ó. He has more than 25 years of teaching, research, and extension experience. In addition, he has already completed seven research projects as Co-PI/Collaborator. For managing existing water resources of the Punjab, he is involved in the research on groundwater modeling, rainwater harvesting, climate change, pump testing, and drip irrigation. He has designed and installed more than hundred rainwater harvesting structures at different sites in the state. He has more than 160 publications in national/international journals, popular articles, book chapters etc. He has guided several B. Tech./M. Tech., and Ph. D. students in his professional career.
About The Book
This university level text book is written to serve as a ready reference for students of agricultural and civil engineering degree programs. It provides an explicit description of the theoretical concepts on groundwater, well hydraulics, well construction, water lifting devices, waterlogged soils, soil permeability measurement, equations for evaluating depth and spacing of drains, surface and subsurface drains, tube well drainage system, and salt affected soils.
Fundamentals of Groundwater and Drainage Engineering, is a book for undergraduate as well as postgraduate students for refreshing their basic knowledge. It is especially useful for the students preparing for the examinations of ASRB and JRF.
