About The Book
Genomics is an evolving interdisciplinary ground of study aimed at collecting, understanding and exploiting the biological information encoded in long stretches of DNA. The composition and structure of virus genomes is more varied than any of those seen in the entire bacterial, plant or animal kingdoms. The nucleic acid comprising the genome may be single-stranded or double-stranded, and in a linear, circular or segmented configuration. The field also includes studies of intragenomic phenomena such as heterosis, epistasis, pleiotropy and other interactions between loci and alleles within the genome. In contrast, the investigation of the roles and functions of single genes is a primary focus of molecular biology or genetics and is a common topic of modern medical and biological research. A gene is a segment of nucleic acid that contains the information necessary to produce a functional product, usually a protein. Genes consist of a long strand of DNA (RNA in some viruses) that contains a promoter, which controls the activity of a gene, and a coding sequence, which determines what the gene produces. This book is aimed at providing readers brief information about the various aspects and applications of genomics.
