Prof. K.V. Peter, Director World Noni Research Foundation, Chennai is the Former Vice-Chancellor, Kerala Agricultural University (KAU); Director, Indian Institute of Spices Research, Calicut; Director of Research KAU and Professor of Horticulture from 1979. A post graduate from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar (1969-1975), he is associated with development of biotic stress resistant varieties in Chilli (Pant-C1, Pant-C2), tomato (Sakthi) and brinjal (Surya) which are grown through out the country.
Prof. Peter provided managerial support to the ICAR Indian Institute of Spices Research Calicut to possess the World’s largest collection of black pepper and cardamom germplasm. The technology package for protected cultivation of bush pepper would make available green pepper throughout the year. A prolific writer and academic editor he authored/edited 72 books published both in India and abroad, 16 technical bulletins, 110 research papers, 22 short research notes, 15 scientific reviews, 111 papers in symposia/seminars, 85 chapters in books, 307 popular articles and 17 radio/TV programmes.
About The Book
The present volume V of series BIODIVERSITY OF HORTICULTURAL CROPS is continuation of earlier volumes, it carries 20 chapters contributed by 42 eminent scientists which covers soil biodiversity, selected crop biodiversity for livelihood security, balancing conservation with development, biodiversity conservation and management in India. Cold desert horticultural crops like cactus (dragon fruit) and their conservation have received special attention. DNA Bar coding as a tool to compliment plant taxonomy is dealt both in theory and practice. Detailed biodiversity profiles of vegetables, indigenous vegetables, common beans, onion, fruits like bael, pear, indigenous mangoes, spices like turmeric, ginger and sub-tropical turmeric, Myristica and related genera are dealt in detail. Conservation of Rare, Endangered and Threatened (RET) medicinal plants, betel vine, dwarf coconuts and annual ornamentals like carnations are elaborated. Information on International Convention for the Protection of new varieties of plants, The Biological Diversity Act-2002 and Agro-Biodiversity hotspots of India are given as Appendices.
