About The Book

Agricultural biotechnology is a collection of scientific techniques, including genetic engineering, that are used to create, improve, or modify plants, animals and microorganisms. Agricultural biotechnology companies work to supply farmers with tools to increase the yield of plant and animal products, while lowering the costs of production. This book is a collection of scientific techniques used to improve plants, animals and microorganisms. Based on an understanding of DNA, scientists have developed solutions to increase agricultural productivity. Starting from the ability to identify genes that may confer advantages on certain crops, and the ability to work with such characteristics very precisely, biotechnology enhances breeders’ ability to make improvements in crops and livestock. Biotechnology enables improvements that are not possible with traditional crossing of related species alone. Biotechnology is used in many ways in agriculture. Agricultural biotechnology can also include production of plants such as orchids for ornamental purposes and plants that can be used for fuel production. To accomplish these goals, biotechnologists develop products to protect animals and crops from disease and help farmers identify the best animals and seeds to use in selective breeding programs. For example, a commercial fish farm might raise fish like salmon, tilapia, or catfish. If the fish were infected by certain viruses, the fish would die and the farm would lose money. To prevent infections, fish farmers use vaccines, developed through biotechnology. Hope this book would be highly useful for the students, teachers and researchers of agril biotechnology, biotechnology Genetics and plant breeding.
