Dr. M.P. Singh. Head of the Department of Forest Sciences. Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi (Jharkhand) earned his mater’s degree in Botany with specialization in Taxonomy and after his Ph.D. degree in Floristic from Patna University and Diploma in Forestry from Forest Research Institute. Indian Council of Forestry Research & Education, Dehradun. He is a fellow in Life Sciences of Mendelian Society of India, Patna. <BR> Dr. J.L. Srivastava is a member of Indian Forest Service, having 32 years of experience. Presently, he is Principal Chief Conservator of Forests in Jharkhand state. <BR> Dr. S.N. Pandey has Earned his Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Extension Education and worked about 30 Years as Chief Training Organiser in a tribal belt of Jharkhand. Presently he is working as a Vice-Chancellor of Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi

In the modern medicine also plants occupy a very significant place as a raw material for some important drugs although synthetic drugs and antibiotics brought about a revolution in controlling different diseases. But these synthetic drugs are out of reach of millions of people. Those who live in remote places depends on traditional healers, whom they know and trust. Judicious use of medicinal herbs can even cure deadly diseases that have long defined synthetic drugs the relationship between man and tree has established since time immemorial. The usefulness of trees and their protection was emphasized in ancient literature like Puranas and the “Bhagawat Gita”. More than 100 medicinal plants are used in modern medicine. Plants used in traditional system of medicine of Pharmaceutical houses in collected from wild sources. Man of the medicinal plants are cultivated commercially now a days for extraction of some important active constituents for use in modern medicine.
