Dr. R.K. Roy is a renowned horticulturist in India with specialization in Floriculture and Landscaping. He has worked in reputed organizations/research institutes like The Agri-Horticultural Society of India, Kolkata; CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow in various capacities. Dr. Roy has been deeply involved in R&D work on Floriculture and Landscaping since last 40 years. He has developed 16 new varieties of ornamentals (Bougainvillea, Canna, Gladiolus etc.) which are popular in floricultural trade. Moreover, he had developed core collection of many ornamentals viz. Bougainvillea, Canna, Cycads, Cacti and Succulents, Gladiolus etc. during his service tenure. Considering his outstanding contribution, he was awarded with many national and international awards/fellowships like “Dr. B.P. Pal Award, Commonwealth Fellowship, Coke Trust Award, RHS Financial Award” by Royal Horticultural Society, London. Dr. Roy has authored many books viz. Ornamental Annuals, House Plants, Kitchen Garden, Gladiolus, Bougainvillea, Marigold, Ornamental Trees of India, Fundamentals of Garden Designing, Bulbous and Rhizomatous Plants, Home Garden, Ornamental Climbers, etc.

The book titled "Bonsai – A Handbook" is a comprehensive book on Bonsai culture. It contains 16 chapters on various aspects viz. History, Principles, Classification, Styles, Containers, Pedestal/Stands, Selection of Plants, Planting, Pruning, Training and Maintenance besides Tools and Implements. Commercial importance of Bonsai in nursery trade has also been described. The main purpose of the book is to provide technical information and guidance to make bonsai in successful way by all class of interested persons. The information provided in this book is based on scientific inputs derived from various sources of national and international journals, books, web sources. This has also been supplemented with field studies and observations made on live plants besides practical experience of the author over 40 years. The requirement of such a handbook was felt while conducting several training courses on Bonsai all over India.
