Mr. P. S. Mani has varied experience in drought and food management, he served as an agriculture extension worker, trainer and supervisor. He has been working on tree-farming and recommending it is an insurance to face nature's furies. On retirement as Additional Director of Agriculture (Extension). He is devoting himself in promoting tree-planting through publication of books on trees. Two of his books on trees secured first and second prizes from the Tamilnadu Government till now. He has published three books on trees and a fourth one on irrigation problems of Tamilnadu and their management. Four more books, three on individual trees and one on pollution containment are under various stages production.

India has no other avenue expect tree farming in wastelands for a massive thrust against rural poverty and tree-farming must be promoted to include processing activities to create an employment stream.
Taking Tamilnadu as an example, the author has vividly brought out the ecological degradation and its impact on agriculture, resulting in acute rural poverty- the highest among the Southern State. A rapid cataloguing of the missed opportunities in not utilizing the wastelands for development is made and the technology for tree-farming is indicated.
A list of 91 trees and 10 bushes for the wastelands is given and the niche (the site suitability) and the uses (the industrial potential) are elaborated exhaustively in part II.
