Author Profile

Dr. K.P. Biswas, M.Sc., Ph.D., D.F.Sc. (Bombay), E.F. (West Germany), F.Z.S., F.A.B.S. (Kolkata) initiated the work on Electro-physiology and Electric Fishing, first in India, in 1961 at Odisha. He designed and developed electric seine, electric fish catcher, electric gill net, electric dip net and a new technique of harmless electric fishing, for which patent applications have been filed. He guided eleven M.Sc. students and one Ph.D. student of Calcutta University and four M.F.Sc. students of West Bengal University of Fishery and Animal Sciences for their thesis work on electrophysiology and fishing with electricity. Miss Namrata Basu, M.Sc. from Calcutta University and a research scholar of Electrophysiological Laboratory, is actively associated with electrofisheries work for more than four years and was an active associate of the invention, “A new technique of harmless electric fishing”.

About The Book

The book, "Five Inventions in Electric Fishing in India" describes how a research endeavour could be nourished for such a long period to find out new ways and means to solve the problems of fish capture with the aid of electric stimulation against all odds and difficulties. Neither sophisticated instruments and equipments for the work was available in the country, nor the trained and knowledgeable personnel to assist in the inventory work. With the available materials and equipments in the country, how the new ways and means have been explored, one after another, to solve the problems. Voices have been raised in many quarters about the illegal and improper use of electricity for fishing, which is not only harmful and causing injuries to fishes, but also has become the cause of fatality to the unauthorized applicators. Proper use under the guidance of qualified and knowledgeable persons, the technique was proved to be very useful for fish capture and less harmful than other fishing gears. The technique of harmless electric fishing described in this book will show a new way of using electric stimulation for mass scale fish capture. The book will be useful for the students and will inspire the research workers.
