Author Profile

Prof. T. Pullaiah obtained his M. Sc. (1973) and Ph. D. (1976) degrees in Botany from Andhra University. He was a Post-doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia, during 1976-1978. He travelled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botanic Gardens in about 17 countries. He joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as Lecturer (1979) and became Professor (1993). He held several positions in the University as Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences; Head, Department of Botany; Chairman, Board of Studies in Botany; Head, Department of Sericulture; Co-ordinator and Chairman, Board of Studies in Biotechnology; Principal, Sri Krishnadevaraya University College. He retired from active Service in 2011 and was selected by UGC as UGC-BSR Faculty Fellow in the Department of Botany, Sri Krishnadevaraya University. He has published 75 books, 335 research papers and 35 popular articles. His books include Flora of Andhra Pradesh (5 volumes), Biodiversity in India (8 volumes) Flora of Telangana (3 volumes), Encyclopaedia of World Medicinal Plants (5 volumes), Ethnobotany of India (5 volumes), Global Biodiversity (4 volumes), Orchids of Eastern Ghats and Monograph on Brachystelma and Ceropegia in India. He was the Principal-Investigator of 20 major Research Projects totalling more than a Crore of Rupees funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, UGC, BSI, WWF, GCC, etc. Under his guidance, 54 students obtained their Ph. D. degrees and 34 students their M. Phil. Degrees. He is the recipient of Best Teacher Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Prof. P. Maheshwari Gold Medal and Dr. G. Panigrahi Memorial Award of Indian Botanical Society and Prof. Y. D. Tiagi Gold Medal of the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy. He was President of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy (2013) and President of the Indian Botanical Society (2014). He was a member of Species Survival Commission of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). Dr. S. Karuppusamy is Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany, The Madura College, Madurai, Tamil Nadu. He obtained his M.Sc. degree from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai and Ph. D. degree from Gandhigram Rural Institute, Deemed Univerrsity, Tamil Nadu. Later on he worked as Post Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Biotechnology, and Research Associate in the Department of Botany, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur. He has published more than 120 research papers in reputed journals and co-authored five books – Flora of Eastern Ghats volume 3 and 4, Flora of Andhra Pradesh volume 5, Revised Flora of Andhra Pradesh Volume 3 and Caralluma (Sensu lato), Orchids of Eastern Ghats and Monograph on Brachystelma and Ceropegia in India. He is the recipient of Prof. Y. S. Murthy Gold Medal from Indian Botanical Society and Rolla S. Rao award from Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy. He is a Fellow of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy and Indian Botanical Society. He is the Principal-Investigator of 3 major Research Projects funded by UGC, SERB and NIF. Under his guidance, 4 students obtained their Ph. D. degrees.

About The Book

In seven volumes of Flora of Eastern Ghats a total number of 3,417 species of seed plants have been enumerated; among them Dicotyledons are dominant with 870 genera with 2433 species. Monocotyledons are 34 families with 304 genera and 978 species. Gymnosperms are belonging two families and 2 genera with 6 species in the wild. In this last volume of Flora of Eastern Ghats an account on grasses, Gymnosperms, additions since the publication of earlier volumes, key to the families and Floristic analysis are given. Key to the genera of Poaceae and Key to the species of each genus are provided. Like other volumes the enumeration of the species include citation according to ICN, basionym and synonyms, if any, to connect Flora of British India and Flora of Presidency of Madras, description distribution in India and the world. Poaceae is the largest family in Flora of Eastern Ghats with 365 species. Index to families, genera and species is given at the end. Line drawings for most of the species are also given.
