T.K. Bose (Born in 1931): M.Sc. (Ag.), Ph.D. of Calcutta University; Former Horticulturist and Secretary the Agri-Horticultural Society of India; Project Coordinator All India Coordinated Floriculture Improvement Project (ICAR); Professor and Head, Department of Horticulture; Dean, Faculty of Agriculture; Director of Research, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, West Bengal; Member, State Agriculture Commission, West Bengal; Member of scientific advisory committees of ICAR, CSIR (Govt. of India) and State Govt. Guided research of about 30 students for their Ph.D. degree. Published more than 250 scientific papers in national and foreign journals and more than 300 popular articles on different aspects of horticulture. Written and edited about 30 books on different aspects of horticulture including fruits, vegetables, floriculture and ornamental plants, plant propagation, mineral nutrition of horticultural crops, biotechnology of horticultural crops, plantation crops, Dictionary of Horticulture (in 10 volumes) in collaboration with co-editors and associates during the last 50 years which have been considered as valuable text and reference books in horticultural science world over. Recipient of awards in recognitions of contributions in the development for horticultural science and technology.
L.J. Singh (Born in 1989): Currently pursuing Ph.D. (Hort.) degree at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, West Bengal with INSPIRE Fellowship, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi; received B.Sc. (Hort.) from Central Agricultural University, Imphal and M.Sc. (Hort.) from University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot with specialization in Postharvest Technology; received university gold medal and Dr. J. C. Anand gold medal for M.Sc. programme; cleared ICAR-SRF (PGS); ICAR-NET examination in the discipline of floriculture and landscaping, and fruit science; contributed 2 research papers, 1 book chapter and 16 poster presentations; attended national and international seminars and training programmes; also a member of various scientific societies.
M.K. Sadhu (Born in 1943): M. Sc. (Ag.), Ph. D. (Calcutta University), Former Professor and Head of the Institute of Agricultural Science, Calcutta University. Engaged in post-graduate teaching and research for the last 40 years; guided 25 students for their Ph. D. (Agri.) degree, and acted as the Principal Investigator of more than a dozen research projects funded by ICAR, UGC, ICFRE and Govt. of West Bengal. Published more than 125 research papers in reputed national and international journals on Horticulture and Plant Science; written and co-edited 8 books and contributed chapters in more than 14 books on Horticulture and Plant Science. Acted as Editor of scientific journals in Agriculture and Biological Science. Visited more than a dozen Research Institutes and Universities in several countries presenting research papers and chairing a session at international symposia and seminars.
T.K. Maity (Born in 1957): Presently Professor of Vegetable Crops, Faculty of Horticulture, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, West Bengal. He obtained B.Sc. (Ag.) Hons., M.Sc. (Ag.) Hort. and Ph.D. Degrees in Horticulture (specialization in Vegetable Crops) from the same university. Engaged in UG and PG teaching and research since 1985. Served as Head, Department of Vegetable Crops; guided 8 Ph.D. and 28 M.Sc. students; handled more than fifteen schemes/projects financed by Govt. of West Bengal, ICAR, Government of India and Private Sectors either as Principal investigator or Co-investigator. Published more than 60 original research papers in journals of national and international repute, contributed 9 chapters in different books, edited two books. Presented quite a good number of papers at various national and international conferences/seminars/symposia, etc. Acted as a resource person in various training programmes organized by universities, State Government, NABARD, CADC, banks, different autonomous bodies, NGOs, rural journalists, etc. He has delivered more than 50 talks in radio and television programmes.
About The Book
During the last six decades, with the increase in awareness of the serious adverse effects of environmental pollution and climate change on living beings on the earth, afforestation, roadside plantation, landscaping, development of botanic gardens, arboretums, parks, private and public gardens have created a great demand for planting materials.
With a steady increase in the demand of cut flowers, cut foliage and pot plants of many flowering and ornamental plants like rose, chrysanthemum, carnation, gerbera, lilium, anthurium, orchids and many others and simultaneous development of greenhouse technology for the production of flowers of superior quality and attractive pot plants including species and cultivars of house plants for a regular supply to domestic and export market the year round.
In view of the facts stated above, it was considered necessary to bring out a publication comprising all major aspects of ornamental horticulture suitable for tropical and subtropical region. Accordingly, the present publication includes 23 chapters on importance, uses and scope of ornamental horticulture; improvement of ornamental plants; garden tools, implements, machineries and accessories; propagation, establishment and management of nursery of ornamental plants; greenhouse technology and cultivation of ornamental plants; trees; shrubs; bulbous plants; house plants; climbers; annuals; orchids; rose; landscape architecture and garden design; carnation; cacti and other succulents; chrysanthemum; gerbera; anthurium; palms; lawn; bonsai; and flower arrangement and floral decoration adequately illustrated in colour.
The present publication, a comprehensive and illustrated publication on tropical and subtropical ornamental plants and garden design, is expected to serve a useful purpose in selection and identification of thousands of ornamental plants for their successful cultivation in suitable environment and location by amateur and professional growers and also as a reference book to learners and to experts in landscape gardens, commercial production of flowers in farms and greenhouses, establishment and management in nurseries.
