Author Profile

"Suresh Chander Mandhar passed his B.Sc. in Agricultural Engineering from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana in 1972 and M.Tech in Design Engineering with Distinction from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1975. He started his carrier during 1974 at Small Industry Extension Training Institute in Hyderabad and served as Assistant Engineer in Farm Machinery Testing Centre, Department of Farm Power and Machinery, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana from 1975-1980. He tested seed cum fertilizer drills, potato planters, sprayers, potato harvesters and threshers for wheat and paddy. He also surveyed the manufacturing technologies of farm machinery in Punjab during this period. He was also teaching Farm Power and Machinery and Mechanical Engineering Courses.
He was appointed Scientist (S-2) Farm Machinery and Power at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore during 1980 and he served Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (ICAR), Banglore for about 33 years and retired as Principal Scientist and Head, Section of Agricultural Engineering. He believed in end to end mechanization of horticultural crops. To attain these he had developed vegetable nursery raising machinery and transplanter for raised bed cultivation of vegetable crops. He also developed seed drill for sowing onion under rainfed cultivation and weeder for raised bed cultivated crops.
The harvesters for mango, sapota, guava and lime have been developed. For mechanisation of mango pickle industry the peeler, slicer and cube cutter has been developed. For mechanization of garlic pickle industry the bulb breaker and garlic peeler has been developed. He also planned and developed the complete campus of Indian Institute Horticultural Research, Bangalore. The rain water harvesting system, irrigation system and drainage systems were developed.
S.C. Mandhar is life member of Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers, Society for Promotion of Horticulture and Institute of Agriculture Technologists, Bangalore. He has received “Dr. J.S. Pruthi Award 1999 and Kejriwal Award 2005“from Association of Food Scientists and Technologists, India for his innovative work on development of machinery for mechanisation of mango and garlic pickle industry. He also received Team Award from Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers for his work on development of machinery for vegetable nurseries. He had been member of Bureau of Indian Standards, Sectional Committee, FAD 20 for Standardization of Agricultural Produce Processing and Milling Machinery and Surface Covered Cultivation Structures. He was also member of National Horticultural Board delegation to visit “EIMA International Agriculture and Gardening Machinery Exhibition” from November 7-11, 2012 at Bologna, Italy. His present interest is end to end mechanization of cultivation of horticultural crops."

About The Book

This book is essentially a Monograph which has been divided into 16 chapters. Chapters I and II summaries the current horticultural scenario as well as status of agricultural mechanization in india. Chapter III through XII deal with various operations, viz. seed bed preparation, planting, nursery raising, soil working tools transplanting of seedlings weeding and mulching, pruning, spraying and harvesting. Information regarding different types of equipment available in India and abroad has been included in these chapters. The last three chapters viz. chapters XIII through XVI deal with packaging of horticultural produce post harvest management and storage, green house design and construction as well as irrigation systems. Thus, it will serve as a useful reference book for teachers, researchers, extension workers, farmers, students as well as other state holder.''
